Tamale Pie

looks delicious! my mom used to make something like that using a cornbread crust, but I bet yours is better :)
I love my mum's tamale pie too although it's different again...I'll put her recipe on here too but I'll have a go at making yours, it sounds yummy!
[this is good]
Your version of tamale pie is definitely going to the top of my to try file. That looks great. I like the idea of the masa crust instead of the traditional cornbread.
Ha, love this post! I had just assumed Tamale Pie would be "authentic" before making it---once I tried it I knew it couldn't possibly be, and google proved that right. Funny that it was a staple dish of the 40-50s, I love learning about what people ate back then!

The green beans sound like a delicious accompaniment!
I just made a tamale pie this afternoon.
I love tamale pie. I made one tonight! (Actually I had to make two casseroles, one for my family and one for church tomorrow). I used ground venison and ground beef mixed together. I also used black beans, but added pinto also. Another ingredient for the filling is black olives (using a chopper and keeping them chunky). For the topping: you can add in green chili, corn and some of the cheese into your masa or corn meal. It's so good!

Can't wait to try your idea with chicken. What do you think about using green sauce instead of red chili?? Hmmm. I love to experiment!
I think a green sauce would be great! I sometimes braise chicken in a salsa verde mixture and then shred it for tacos/burritos.
